Toby the getrag 265 is the one with the removable bell housing, it was used intermittently in the big 6 cyl cars and the early m-cars, the 260 shown was pretty much used as the other transmission for the 6 cyls they are both pretty good boxes.

I've found that the front case gets removed from the rear case, and all the transmission internals stay mounted to the rear case. I've removed: Input bearing retainer. Snap ring from input shaft. Reverse light switch.First, this does not apply to the 260 trans, only 265s. Like Tom says, there are 2 changes. First, there is a drive gear on the trans output shaft that is replaced by a spacer bushing on the M3 trans. Second, there is a hole in the trans rear case part that has a sheet metal plug, kind of like a freeze plug in a block, that has to be pried out.If there isn't an obvious problem, it's likely best to source another transmission. If you loosen either of the two bolts for the reverse gear shaft, you'll need to reapply sealant when reinstalling.
